ALMONERS REPORT

Since the March 2020 Almoners report, I can advise with sadness that:

Robyn Yates (nee Foote) Died peacefully at Warkworth Hospital on 16 November 2019, aged 74. Much loved mother and mother-in-law of Darren and Nicki, Paul and Kim, and Michael and Stacey, Robyn will be missed by her wide family. Robyn joined Air NZ in 1988, is well remembered for her role in Finance and retired in 2006. A funeral service was held for Robyn in Warkworth on 21 November 2019, followed by a private cremation.

Robyn Clare Larsen died on 16 February 2020 aged 74, after a brief illness. Dearly loved partner of Bob. Wife of the late Alan. Robyn worked in the Flight Kitchen at Air NZ from 1977 to 2001. A service was held at Grange Manor Chapel of Davis Funerals, Mt Eden.

Denis Arthur Dempsey, has died in Tauranga. Denis, who retired from Air NZ Logistics in 1992, moved to a retirement village in Pyes Pa, Tauranga and remained a member of the club in recent years.

Irene Kingwill passed away on 29 March 2020 after a battle with cancer and heart failure, aged 91. Beloved wife of Roy (deceased) and dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Kym, and Jayne, Carne and John, and Denise and Larry. As Irene Zimmerman, she was one of the Company’s early flying boat hostesses. She transferred to Traffic where she met and married Roy Kingwill. Irene will be cremated, and a family service will be held later.

Elizabeth Mary (Liz) Watson (nee Buchanan) died in Auckland Hospital on 24 April 2020. Liz was the beloved wife of the late Skip Watson, and the stepmother and mother in law of Lenore and Doug, Murray, Peter and Didi, the late Brett and Jules. Together, Liz and Skip made an enormous contribution to the development, success and culture of the New Zealand airline industry, Air New Zealand, and its predecessors. In recent years Liz has been an active supporter and contributor to Retirement Club activities and will be missed very much by all who knew her. Given the current circumstances a memorial service will be held later. (Card sent).

William Kevin (Kevin) Kelleher died in Middlemore Hospital on 25 April 2020, aged 89, with his family by his side. Dearly loved husband of Joyce, much loved father of Susan and Peter and father-in-law of Peter. Kevin joined Air New Zealand after RNZAF service and had been an active club member. A private service is being held.

Our thoughts, deepest sympathy and best wishes are extended to the relatives and friends of each of the families in these sad times.

Brian Cudby - Almoner

4. PRESIDENT's REPORT for 2019/20

It is my pleasure to present this report and the activities of your club over the past 12 months.

In regard to outings arranged during the year we had two very successful lunches - one at the Waipuna Hotel in August and one at the North Shore Golf Club in October and both were well attended by members. Whilst it was intended to hold another lunch later in the year at the Maungakiekie Golf Club, this regrettably had to be cancelled due to the Coronavirus Epidemic which in time engulfed other countries if not the whole world. With the introduction of Covid 19 it also meant the Retirees Club regrettably had to cancel the AGM Lunch due to be held at the Remuera Club 17 June as well as cancelling Committee Meetings.

On a brighter note the Christmas Lunch held 4 December was well attended by members and the guest speaker was Bronwyn Groot who is the Fraud Education Manager at the Commission for Financial Capability. Her presentation on the Scams and Fraudulent activities of the various companies and associations, some being well known, was very enlightening but by the same token alarming as to how these scams work and how people are easily taken in and lose large amounts of money.

Member numbers remain reasonably stable albeit we have sadly lost a few members who have passed away but have been replaced by a similar number of new members. Two new members Antoinette Nelson and Steve Hills joined the Retirees Committee. The latter is also on the Sports and Social Club Committee which gives the Retirees Committee a contact for Retirees who we felt could and would make more use of the various holiday homes in New Zealand.

I have to express my sincere thanks to the Committee for their valuable and personal support during the past year and at the same time to pass a sincere vote of thanks to our Secretary Anne Jaggard who has regrettably resigned from the Committee for personal reasons. Also, my sincere thanks on behalf of all members for the sterling resolve by Gaye and John Roscoe in being able to produce the Newsletter given the current circumstances.

My apologies for the briefness of the report but the events of recent weeks have as you will appreciate curtailed lots of activities.

John Hooper
